Growing Broccoli in grow bags.

Why should you use a grow bag to grow your broccoli. You can grow a delicious broccoli harvest in a grow bag even if you have very little room to grow (patio, balcony, deck or small yard). You can also grow for a longer period using grow bags because you have more control over the environment you grow your broccoli. You should use a grow bag that is at least 3 gallons because it is a larger and heavier feeding vegetable.

How do you grow your broccoli in grow bags:

• You will need a 3 gallon or bigger grow bag. Broccoli is a heavy feeder so you will need a potting soil that is high in nutrition.

• Broccoli also need the soil to be light, well aerated and good drainage.

• If you start with a good potting soil, you should only need to fertilize once or twice.

• Choose a fast maturing broccoli like our Waltham 29 and you will be able to harvest your broccoli in 50-65 days.

• Put 2 seeds in your grow bag to insure one will grow. If they both germinate then thin out the smaller of the two.

• Plant your seeds outdoor in your grow bag 2-3 weeks before the average last frost.

• Keep the soil moist but not drenched and in a warm area.

• The seeds should germinate in 5-10 days.

• Keep the soil moist and provide lots of light for the next 3-4 weeks and watch it grow.

  Harvesting your Broccoli:

• Your broccoli plants should be ready to harvest in 50-70 days. You should be able to harvest your plant multiple times before the summer heat causes it to flower.

• Your main head will be the first harvest. Grow bag grown broccoli will be anywhere from 3-6 inches when harvested. The best tasting will be a dark green and have no flowers. To harvest, use a sharp knife and cut through the stem 5-6 inches below of the head.

• Your second harvest will be the plants side shoots. These are smaller heads of broccoli. You should be able to harvest these side heads a few weeks after your main harvest.

  Once you harvest the last of your spring heads of broccoli, you can now use your grow bag to plant a vegetable that is more suited to the heat of summer.
